ADVICES
Clumber Spaniel is a true aristocrat dog. Clumbers are excellent hunters having the best noses and their massive body gives them great endurance in the work. They are easily trained, easily controlled and unusually intelligent. They take naturally to retrieving, are good water dogs and love any kind of hunting. They work very well in thick underbrush and as they are very silent workers are able to come up very close to the game. The Clumber is a gentle, loyal and affectionate dog. An intelligent and independent thinker. He displays determination and a strong sense of purpose while at work. Clumbers are excellent house-pets and should be kept in an apartment or a residential home. They can thrive with moderate exercise, though some Clumbers can be high energy dogs. Clumbers are sometimes reserved with strangers but never hostile or timid. In time they will display their playful and loving nature. Clumbers get along well with just about everyone - other animals included. They are fine guardians for children. They are never unfriendly and show no signs of aggressive behaviour. They like carry things in their mounths, often picking something off the floor to greet you. Many Clumbers will wag their whole back ends while bending their long bodies so that the head almost touches the rear. It is quite unique and captivating. Clumbers with a natural tail can wag their tail so much that it hits both sides of their belly. The Clumber does not respond harsh insincere treatment. He simply refuses to budge, causing some people to think he is dumb. On the contrary, he is intelligent enough to let you know he will not tolerate abuse. He needs a kind but firm hand. An average Clumber lives around 10-12 years, however in the past twenty years it has not been uncommon for a Clumber to live to the age of 15 or 16. Failure to produce sufficient exercise and too much of food will result in an overweight condition, atrophy of the muscles and a reduced lifespan.
